There are many movies/Netflix series similar to Eat Pray Love, reminding you that there’s so much to see and feel in life and to take ownership of yourself and pursuing a passionate life for yourself regardless of what the society says and how your life situation looks like at the moment.

In this post, I’ll share movies that you’ll enjoy if you enjoyed Eat Pray Love. These will show you how people strive to find themselves in respective societies.

Into the wild (drama/adventure)

This movie is about Christopher who graduates top of class, embarking on a journey to Alaskan wilderness instead of choosing a stable and profitable career. Along the way, he faces a number of characters that shape his view of the world.

Tuscan (romance)

When her happy marriage in San Francisco ends, Frances travels to and buys a house in Tuscany. She eventually seeks and finds love.

The pursuit of happiness (drama)

Based on a true story, this movie is about a struggling single father, Chirs and his son, trying to create a better life for themselves.

Wild (drama/adventure)

After her marriage failure and mother’s death, Cheryl decides to hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail alone. This movie shows a touching journey of a woman overcoming her fears, which ultimately makes her stronger.

This movie inspires you to fight for yourself and push through no matter what happens

Midnight in Paris (romance)

This movie is easily one of the best movies in the world. Gill, a screenwriter and an aspiring novelist tours Paris by himself during the trip with his fiancé. During the night, he meets a few people who take him to travels to the past, where he experiences Paris in 1920s.

Coco before Chanel (biographical drama)

This movie is about Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s life, who began her life as an orphan but lived an extraordinary life as a fashion designer.

The fault in our stars (romance)

Inspired by a real story, the movie is about two teenagers who fall in love after meeting each other at a cancer support group. They travel to Amsterdam to find Peter Van Houte, the authoer of An Imperial Affliction which is Hazel’s favorite book.

Alice in the cities (drama/ adventure)

This black & white German movie is from 1970s. A German journalist Philip is driving across the United States to research an article. Unfortunately, he loses his job in the states and has to go back to Germany.

He then returns to Germany with a young girl Alice after Alice’s mother, Lisa, had left the child in his custody to take care of an urgent business. Philip and Lisa develop friendship later and travel to a small German town, Ruhr to find Alice’s grandmother.

The reader (Romance Germany)

Partially based on a true story, the movie tells a story of a German lawyer who finds out that the older girl he had a relationship with and disappeared abruptly in the past, was involved with Nazi.

The book “The Reader” by Bernhard Schlink is one of the 100 books to read by DW, translated into 40 languages.

Goodbye Lenin! (comedy)

The movie is about a young anti-communist young man trying to hide the the fact that communism has failed from her mother. His mother who is a loyal Communist party member, fell into a coma when she saw Alex participating in an anti-communist rally.

Imagine waking up from a coma and learning your country doesn’t exist anymore…

A coffee in Berlin (comedy)

The movie describes the life of a modern twentysomething who put off important decision to later and refuses to grow up.

Niko, who is in his twenties, breaks up with her girlfriend, drops out of law school and lives his life,  “searching for meaning”, but not doing much in reality.

100 Things (100 Dinge) (comedy)

Tony and Paul decided to let go of all their belongings for 100 days, retrieving one of the items each day. The best friends learn what is really important in life.

Before sunrise (Vienna) (Romance)

This movie is about two Americans, Jesse and Ceiline, whom after meeting each other on a train from Budapest decide to spend a day together in Vienna. This movie will take you to beautiful spots in Vienna, including Donaukanal, Viennese cafes, Wiener Riesenrad and many more.

Before sunset (Romance)

This movie is set 9 years after Before Sunrise (Vienna), before sunrise. Jesse and Celine meet in Paris for the first time in nine years, and try to figure out if they are meant for each other.

Night Train to Lisbon (Drama/Romance)

Raimund, a high school Latin teacher/ an expert in ancient languages, takes a spontaneous trip Lisbon, after a woman he saved disappears behind her coat and leaves a book by a Portuguese author. In Lisbon, he further learns about the book and a tragic love story.

This movie is so thought-provoking and rich in history, philosophy, culture, transcending time and space; you’ll love watching this movie on a quite night in.

Just Married (Romance/Comedy)

The movie is about Sarah and Tom who get married against Sarah’s family’s wishes and travel to Europe for a honeymoon. If you are looking for a light romcom full with love, this is the perfect feel good movie.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (romance/comedy)

The movie is about Vicky and Cristina who travel to Barcelona for a summer vacation.

Rome with love

To Rome with Love is a story about Americans, Italians, and others living their lives in Rome. If you love Rome or are planning to visit Rome, you have to watch this!

The Sound of music (musical drama)

The sound of music is a 1965 American musical drama film taking place in Salzburg. The story is based on the real life story of the Von Trapp Family singers.

Maria, as aspiring nun, is sent to take care of seven motherless children. You will be able to spot beautiful palaces, gardens and churches including Mirabell Palace and Gardens where they sing the iconic song, “Do Re Mi.”

Sleepless in Seattle (romance comedy)

The movie is inspired by a real story, where Sam moves to Seattle with his son when his wife dies.

Sleepless in Seattle is the perfect movie for you if you are in search of yourself and true love.

Frances Ha (Comedy Drama)

The story is about Frances, a 27 years old New Yorker, who is chasing her dreams unapologetically. In this black and white movie, we follow her journey of career, friendship, ambition, failure and redemption.

The heartwarming movie depicts the lives of twentysomething, where young women going after they want, moving across the world, struggling from time to time, losing friends but reconciling in the years to come.

Sex and the city 1 Romance

This iconic movie is about 4 successful women in New York City, each living their lives prioritizing family, career, relationship and others. Carrie, a New York City journalist who has a successful career, is finally getting married to her Mr. Big, but he ends up not showing up at the altar.

Sex and the city 2

Four women travel to Abu Dhabi to take a break from their busy and stressful life in New York City when Samantha’s client flies her and her friends on an all-expenses-paid luxury vacation to Abu Dhabi.

 

TV Series

Emily in Paris

This was one of the most talked about Netflix series last year. It’s definitely debatable whether this is a fair representation of life in Paris, but the series will take you to beautiful Paris where you can see French food, housing and many more.

Emily, an American girl, relocates to Paris to work for a French marketing agency. If you have lived abroad, you’ll relate to her balance of  struggle of trying to make sense of new ways of doing things and enjoying the novelty of living in a foreign country.

La La Land (Musical Romance Comedy)

La La Land is so famous for showing the beautiful sceneries of LA where Mia and Sebastian chase their creative careers relentlessly. As a musical film, the movie has catchy music’s that have become so famous.

Up (Animation Adventure)

The movie is about a 78-year-old Carl traveling to Paradise Falls in his house. Although it’s an animation movie, it’s truly for all ages, with riveting storytelling that everyone will enjoy watching.

The Bucket List (Comedy Drama)

The story is about two terminally ill men completing to-do list before they die. They drive racing cars, play poker in Monte Carlo, eat caviar and many more.
