Movies Like Eat Pray Love

It's a quintessential movie for all twenty-something women and beyond, inspiring many women to go on a spiritual journey to find themselves.
The movie assures us that It's okay to be lost in life and gives us the courage to want more and pursue everything we want, whether it be freedom, forgiveness, or love.

In this post, I'll share 31 movies that you'll love if you enjoyed watching Eat Pray Love. These will take you to different cities worldwide and show how people strive to find themselves in their respective societies.


While watching these, take a moment to remind yourself to take ownership and pursue a passionate life regardless what obstacles are present. These movies touch on thought-provoking themes such as love, death, friendship, success.


1. A coffee in Berlin (comedy)

The movie describes the life of a modern twenty-something who put off all the important life decisions to later and refuses to grow up.
Niko, who is in his twenties, breaks up with her girlfriend, drops out of law school, and lives his life, "searching for meaning," but not doing much in reality.

This movie is great for those curious about one of the world's hippest cities, Berlin, and the people who live there. Berlin was previously divided into East and West due to political ideology until 1991. Shortly after the Berlin wall was demolished, young people from all over Germany moved to the city for affordable housing and opportunities.

Nowadays, it is Europe's startup hub where the brightest entrepreneurs from all over the world with big dreams.


2. Goodbye Lenin! (comedy)

The movie is about a young anti-communist young man trying to hide the fact that communism has failed from her mother. His mother, a loyal Communist party member, fell into a coma when she saw Alex participating in an anti-communist rally.

Imagine waking up from a coma and learning your country doesn't exist anymore… 

3. The reader (Romance)

Partially based on a true story, the movie tells a story of a German lawyer who finds out that the older girl he had a relationship with and disappeared abruptly in the past was involved with the Nazi.

If you are interested in German culture and history, give this movie a go. The book "The Reader" by Bernhard Schlink is one of the 100 books to read by DW, translated into 40 languages.

4. 100 Things/100 Dinge (comedy)

Tony and Paul decides to let go of all their belongings for 100 days, retrieving one of the items each day. Through this process. the best friends learn what is really important in life.

Minimalist lifestyle has become extremely popular for the past few years where people focus more on purpose of owning things than materialistic things. This movie is perfect for those who have thought about minimalism and what's really important in life.

5. Alice in the cities (drama/ adventure) 

This black & white German movie is from the 1970s. Philip, a German journalist, drives across the United States to research an article. Unfortunately, he loses his job in the states and has to go back to Germany.

He then returns to Germany with a young girl, Alice after Alice's mother, Lisa, had left the child in his custody to take care of an urgent business. Philip and Lisa develop a friendship later and travel to a small German town, Ruhr, to find Alice's grandmother. 


6. Coco before Chanel (biographical drama)

This movie is about Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel's life, who began her life as an orphan but lived an extraordinary life as a fashion designer. 

7. Midnight in Paris (romance) 

This movie is easily one of the best movies in the world. Gill, a screenwriter and an aspiring novelist, tours Paris by himself during a trip with his fiancé. During the night, he meets a few people who take him to travels to the past, where he experiences Paris in the 1920s.

If you love Paris, you'll definitely love this movie.

8. Before sunset (Romance)

This movie is set 9 years after Before Sunset (in Vienna), before sunrise. Jesse and Celine meet again in Paris for the first time in nine years and try to figure out if they are meant for each other.


9. Wild (drama/adventure)

After her marriage failure and mother's death, Cheryl decides to hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail alone. This movie shows an emotional journey of a woman overcoming her fears, which ultimately makes her stronger.

This movie will inspire you to fight for yourself and push through no matter what happens.

11. Into the wild (drama/adventure)

This movie is about Christopher, who graduates at the top of the class, embarking on a journey to the Alaskan wilderness instead of choosing a stable and profitable career. Along the way, he faces several characters that shape his view of the world. 

This movie is perfect for anyone who wants to follow their heart and deviate from a conventional way of living of living.

12. Sleepless in Seattle (romance/comedy)

The movie is inspired by a real story, where Sam moves to Seattle with his son when his wife dies. 

Sleepless in Seattle is the perfect movie for you if you are in search of yourself and true love. 

10. The pursuit of happiness (drama) 

Based on a true story, this movie is about a struggling single father, Chris, and his son, trying to create a better life for themselves.

This movie will remind you to take care of yourself and your loved ones and fight for what you deserve. 

13. Frances Ha (Comedy/Drama)

The story is about Frances, a 27 years old New Yorker, chasing her dreams unapologetically. In this black and white movie, we follow her pursuit of a career, friendship, ambition, failure, and redemption. 

The heartwarming movie depicts the lives of twenty-somethings, where young women go after they want, move across the world, struggle from time to time, lose friends but reconcile in the years to come. 

14. Sex and the city 1 (Romance)

This iconic movie is about 4 successful women in New York City, each living their lives prioritizing family, career, relationship, and others. Carrie, a New York City journalist who has a successful career, finally plans her wedding after her boyfriend proposes, but he ends up not showing up at the altar. 

15. Sex and the city 2 (Romance)

Four women travel to Abu Dhabi to take a break from their busy and stressful life in New York City when Samantha's client flies her and her friends on an all-expenses-paid luxury vacation to Abu Dhabi.

16. Sex and the City 3 (coming soon)

If you have watched Sex and the City 1 and 2 already and loved them as much, I did keep an eye out for Sex and the City 3 coming soon! 

17. La La Land (Musical Romance Comedy)

La La Land is so famous for showing beautiful sceneries of LA where Mia and Sebastian chase their creative careers relentlessly. As a musical film, you can listen to the catchy music pieces that have become so famous.


18. Letters to Juliet (romance) 

The story is about Sophie meeting Charlie in Verona, Italy. Verona is a beautiful town in Northern Italy, famous for being the setting for Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet.

After finding a love letter that is 50 years old, Sophie writes to the girl who wrote the letter. Charlie, Claire's grandson, receives the letter, and the two fall in love.

19. To Rome with love (romance)

To Rome with Love is a story about Americans, Italians, and others living in Rome. This movie is set in Rome, and Woody Allen directed it; need I say more? 

20. Under the Sun Tuscan (romance) 

When her happy marriage in San Francisco ends, Frances travels to and buys a house in Tuscany. She eventually seeks and finds love. 

21. The tourist (thriller)

This fantastic thriller movie will take you to beautiful places in Venice. 

Frank, an American tourist, travels to Italy after a heartbreak. Elise approaches Frank on the train to Venice, leading everyone to believe Frank is her lover since she is wanted by the police.


22. The fault in our stars (romance) 

Inspired by a real story, the movie is about two teenagers who fall in love after meeting each other at a cancer support group. They travel to Amsterdam to find Peter Van Houte, the author of An Imperial Affliction, Hazel's favorite book. 

23. Before sunrise (Vienna) (Romance)

This movie is about two Americans, Jesse and Celine, who decide to spend a day together in Vienna after meeting each other on a train from Budapest. This movie will take you to beautiful spots in Vienna, including Donaukanal, Viennese cafes, Wiener Riesenrad, and many more.

24. Night Train to Lisbon (Drama/Romance)

Raimund, a high school Latin teacher/ an expert in ancient languages, takes a spontaneous trip to Lisbon after a woman he saved disappears behind her coat and leaves a book by a Portuguese author. In Lisbon, he further learns about the book and a tragic love story.

This movie is so thought-provoking and rich in history, philosophy, culture, transcending time and space; you'll love watching this movie on a quiet night in.

25. Just Married (Romance/Comedy) 

The movie is about Sarah and Tom who get married against Sarah's family's wishes and travel to Europe for a honeymoon. This is the perfect feel-good movie if you are looking for a light rom-com full of love. 

26. Vicky Cristina Barcelona (romance/comedy)

The movie is about Vicky and Cristina who travel to Barcelona for a summer vacation.

27. Everything is illuminated (Comedy/drama)

The story is about a young man who travels to a small Ukrainian town to find the woman who saved his grandfather during the Nazi invasion. 

Not only will this movie let you discover the less known town in Ukraine, but it will also leave you feeling warm and touched. 

28. The Sound of Music (musical drama)

The Sound of music is a 1965 American musical drama film taking place in Salzburg. The story is based on the real-life story of the Von Trapp Family singers.

As an aspiring nun, Maria embarks on a mission to care for seven motherless children. You will be able to spot beautiful palaces, gardens, and churches, including Mirabell Palace and Gardens, where they sing the iconic song, "Do Re Mi." 

29. The Bucket List (Comedy/Drama)

The story is about two terminally ill men completing a to-do list before they die. They drive racing cars, play poker in Monte Carlo, eat caviar, and more.

Steve Jobs once said, "Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life." The idea of death is scary but it helps us re-evaluate our path and take bold actions. Although humorous and quirky, the movie will leave you with so many feelings and messages to reflect on.

30. Up (Animation Adventure)

The movie is about a 78-year-old Carl traveling to Paradise Falls in his house. Although it's an animation movie, it's truly for people of all ages, with riveting storytelling that everyone can relate to.

Emily in Paris was one of the most talked-about Netflix series last year. It's definitely debatable whether this is a fair representation of life in Paris, but the series will take you to beautiful Paris, where you can see French food, housing lifestyle, and many more.

Emily, an American girl, relocates to Paris to work for a French marketing agency. If you have lived abroad, you'll relate to her balance of struggles with making sense of new ways of doing things and enjoying the novelty of living in a foreign country.
