5 TIPS ON MAKING MONEY WHILE STUDYING ABROAD IN GERMANY

7 BEST TRIP PLANNING WEBSITES FOR FEMALE TRAVELER

cologne christmas markets 2021

While most Christmas Markets are canceled in 2021, the Cologne Christmas Markets are still open as of early December with Covid restrictions. Please check before your visit to make sure they are still open.

Brief background of Cologne

Cologne (Köln), located in NRW state, is one of Germany's oldest and biggest cities. Before World World 2, the city had undergone occupations by the French (1794-1815) and the British (1918-1926). Today, Cologne is one of Germany's major cultural hubs for technology, media, and arts.

If you are arriving at Cologne Central Station (Hauptbahnhof), you will see the magnificent Cologne Cathedral (Koelner Dom) as you exit the station. The cathedral is the third-tallest church and tallest cathedral in the world. In fact, Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market is one of the main Christmas markets you shouldn't miss. Without further ado, here are 8 Cologne Christmas markets you should visit this year!

Visiting Cologne Christmas Markets In 2021 (+ Itinerary)

Stop 1: Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market

Upon exiting the Central station, you will reach the market right away. 150 wooden stalls offer everything from Christmas tree ornaments to Gluehwein (mulled wine).

There's live music, so grab some snacks and enjoy!

  • November 22-December 23, 2021
  • Open daily Sunday-Wednesday 11 am-9 pm, Thursday-Friday 11 am-10 pm, Saturday 10 am-10 pm

Stop 2: Adventsdorf am Kolner Dom

This market is a smaller one located right next to the Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market. Although this is smaller, there is a Christmas carousel with beautifully lighted candles. Perfect for a photo!

  • November 22-December 26, 2021
  • Open daily Sunday-Thursday 11 am-10 pm, Friday-Saturday 11 am-11 pm

Stop 3: Alter Market

The Alter market is located next to Heumarkt station, in the heart of the old town.

The district is one of the most beautiful spots in Cologne, even without all the Christmas lights, so it's needless how beautiful it looks with the lights.

The market is famous for having the ice rink where you can skate, and right next to it are cute gnomes riding the ski lift!! How adorable!

  • November 22-December 23, 2021
  • Open daily from 11 am-10 pm

Stop 4: Angel Christmas Market in Neumarkt

The oldest Christmas market in Cologne is in the city's shopping district, making it a perfect place to stroll around while you do some holiday gift shopping as well. Above all, you'll love the twinkling lights here.

  • November 22-December 23, 2021
  • Open daily Sunday-Thursday 11 am-9 pm, Friday-Saturday 11 am-10 pm

Stop 5: Village of Saint Nicholas

This market is perfect for kids to hang around. St. Nicholas walks around to greet them, and they can participate in arts and crafts here. Moreover, there's a light show so visit after the sunset when it's dark.

  • November 22-December 23, 2021
  • Open daily Sunday-Thursday 11 am-9 pm, Friday 11 am-10 pm, and Saturday 10 am-10 pm.

Stop 6: Heavenue Cologne

Located in Rodulfplatz, this market is the gay Christmas market in Cologne. The market has a different atmosphere than the traditional one since it's decorated with pink and blue.

There's live music, so check out their website to see who performs during your visit.

Stop 7: Habor Christmas Market

Located next to the Chocolate museum, this one has a maritime theme. It's a little further away from (15 min subway ride/30 min walk) towards the Rhein river. I recommend walking along the Rhine Promenade because it's beautiful!!

You can ride the Ferris wheel here for the best views of the city.

  • November 19-December 23, 2021
  • Open Daily Sunday-Thursday 11 am-9 pm, Friday-Saturday 11 am-10 pm

Stop 8 (Optional): Gut Klarenhof Christmas Market

If you are staying in Cologne for a while, I recommend checking out this small Christmas market outside the city.

Not only can you enjoy the Christmas lights and food here, but you can also cut your own Christmas tree (not available this year due to Covid), shop locally grown vegetables, visit small animals and also play mini-golf.

From Cologne Central Station, take S12 or 19 to Koeln-Weiden West. After a 10 min walk in the field, you'll reach the market.

What to eat

  1. Reibekuchen (Potato pancake)
  2. Flammlachs (Smoked salmon) - Try with honey-mustard or herb sauces!
  3. Wurst (Sausage)
  4. Currywurst (Sausage with curry sauce)
  5. Kaesespaetzle (Egg noodles with cheese)
  6. Gebrannte mandeln (Candied almonds)

Amy's Tips

1. Make sure to bring your cup or coins for mulled wine. The prices on the menu often don't include the deposit, so it's best to prepare with some coins. They will give you the deposit back when you return the mug.

2. Each Christmas market has a different mug depending on the theme. For example, the one in Neumarkt has cute little angels mugs. If you plan to keep a mug as a souvenir, you can pick the prettiest among all.

3. If you are pressed for time or don't want to walk through different Christmas markets, you can take one of the Christmas market trains. It's available every 15 min for hopping on and off; check the website for the details.

Conclusion

I hope you found this itinerary for the Cologne Christmas Markets 2021 helpful! This season is so festive, warm, and joyful in Germany, and as you walk through the markets, you'll discover so many German traditions and food you didn't know. Happy travels and stay safe!
